Orthodontic Appliances

A variety of orthodontic appliances are available in Dr. Sherwood's office as part of you or your child's customized treatment plan. Below are several common examples.

Metal Braces

By far the most common orthodontic appliance consists of small metal squares called "brackets" attached to the teeth. These braces have become very acceptable among patients of all ages for their versatility and efficiency. A wide array of color choices are available.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces offer a less visible alternative to metal braces. Dr. Sherwood uses the "Radiance" ceramic brace made from a pure sapphire crystal. This brace is nearly invisible, especially when paired with specially formulated esthetic wires. It also offers the same reliability and performance of traditional metal braces.

Invisible Aligners

Invisible aligners can be substituted for braces in older children and adults when minor corrections of the teeth are necessary. These consist of a series of removable, clear plastic trays. They have several advantages over traditional braces including ease of wear and esthetics.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

By correcting the alignment of you or your child's teeth and jaws, orthodontic treatment can boost self-esteem. With an attractive smile, academic, professional and personal relationships can be approached with confidence.

Even more, orthodontic treatment can have a positive impact on the health of teeth and gums. For instance, straight teeth are easier to brush and floss than crowded, overlapping teeth. And it is a well known fact that effective brushing and flossing is the best prevention for tooth decay and gum disease. Also, when the teeth are properly situated in the jaws they are best able to withstand the forces of chewing.
